Theaster Gates Studio (TGS) is looking for a full-time, pro-active Registrar to work in the artist's studio in Chicago. TGS is a busy, multi-faceted environment that supports the artist's dynamic practice that includes sculpture, painting, film and research-based works.

The Registrar oversees all aspects relating to the production, coordination and transportation of artworks as well as maintaining TGS's artwork database and functioning as the first point of contact for all artwork queries. This position will coordinate and execute multiple projects and solve unforeseen issues inherent in both the volume and quality demands of a significant inventory. The Registrar will also be responsible for maintaining the studio archive, film depository and the artist’s personal archive and collection.

Applicants should have relevant registrarial experience as well as familiarity working with a broad range of materials and studio production. The role requires excellent administrative and communication skills, both with the artist, his wider team and external contacts including fabricators, galleries and museums. Job description
Overview: The Registrar is responsible for managing all aspects relating to the production, coordination and transportation of artworks and the studio's artwork database.
• Coordinate all shipments to and from the studio, multiple storage facilities, galleries and museums
• Manage and accurately maintain the studio's artwork database
• Liaise between the artist, gallery and museum contacts, external fabricators, art shippers and handlers on all shipping matters associated with the artist’s rigorous schedule of exhibitions, museum shows, and art fairs
• Generate and oversee artwork records, condition reports, handling instructions, technical specifications, loan agreements and consignments for all artworks moving in and out of the studio
• Maintain production, shipping and consignment calendars
• Obtain shipping estimates and budgeting costs along with necessary site visits to gather information for accurate cost assessments
• Maintain current knowledge of shipping requirements, safe handling and transport and other relevant national and international regulations

Desired skills and experience:
• Minimum three years’ experience in artwork registration within a gallery, institution or studio
• Minimum Bachelor-level degree
• Personable character with excellent communication skills
• Strong administrator
• Capable of working independently as well as with a team
• Familiarity with ArtBase or similar databases
• Extremely detail oriented and accuracy focused
• Flexible and adept at managing multiple priorities and crafting creative solutions

Salary dependent on experience.
